Abstract

Using technologies in second/foreign language instruction has long been an issue of large debate among contemporary scholars and an enquiry for practitioners in education-particularly teachers. Technologies are indeed invading our classrooms and in different ways. More and more teachers are implementing technological devices of various types in their language teaching for the main aim of fulfilling requirements of the digital generation of students in their classrooms. It is a reality that the technology-based classroom as apposed to the traditional technology-free classroom is increasingly becoming an urgent need in today’s electronic world of education especially at the university. The presence of a technology in the classroom is not, however, a total guarantee for success in teaching, a sine-qua-non condition is an enthusiastic teacher who is ready for innovation at any time. A teacher who knows his tasks, performs his roles, reflects on his teaching, challenges constraints and most of all uses the technology for the benefits of his students. The present paper explores issues related to the technology-based classroom with special emphasis on EFL. It seeks to spot light on EFL university teachers’ attitudes towards technologies, their awareness of the importance of technologies in foreign languages teaching and mainly the constraints that impede them from using technologies in teaching the foreign language. It further focuses on teachers’ assuming new roles in the technology classroom and their readiness for change as a step towards their professional development and the development of their students’ learning.
