Mirian Nichida, Ensino Básico Técnico e Tecnológico - IFTO (Brazil)

Abstract

In everyday bases, Informatics Communication Technologies (ICTs) is a routine in anyone´s life.   In consequence, the public school sector has been going through a transformation process, however, in a very slow pace. (BARBOSA, SANTOS, ALCOFORADON & SARTORE, 2012)

To try to make this reality change, a project is being developed at the Instituto Federal do Tocantins – campus Paraíso do Tocantins, which has the objective of popularizing the American literature using graphic computer animation produced by the students. The literature piece that was chosen is “Annabel Lee” by Edgar Allan Poe. The project was proposed and the pupils had freedom to select the material to be worked with. That means that their preferences is taken place in a way that they feel pleasure to put the activity into practice.

Paiva (2001) points out that the mechanisms offered by the new technologies proffer a richer environment possibilities to acquire a second language. In that sense, this project is another way to make English as a Second Language be more attractive for students in the high school level. They will also apply the knowledge they have been mastering in their technical course, which is in the informatics field.

Moreover, according to Dörnyei (2001), it is an intrinsic motivational value to demonstrate that the effort on developing the animation that will be recognized by fellow colleagues from a previous studying environment. Where their work will be shown to others, so that it would instigate reflection about the theme “love” in the American poem. Schneider (2008) pointed that in the poem Poe portraits a pure love that it is also corresponded by his beloved one.

Another tool used in the second phase was a Brazilian music which portraits love behave as it happens nowadays; the music was “Cafajeste” by Thaeme and Thiago. In this song, love is described as something superficial, without any commitment. Which is what Bauman (2004) stated is how fragile human being tides has become with the modern society, making the relationship between lovers turned up as a “pocket relationship” where someone enjoys another one and then at his\\her convenience he\\she is returned back.

After all the material is gathered, in the second part of the project, a dialogue would be driven to make a parallel between the two types of feelings promoting a comparative discussion among the guest audience from an estate public high school.

For the ESL classes, an interview will be held with the project group after all the tasks are concluded in a conversation activity during class.
