Abstract

In an L2 Public Speaking course where learner anxiety is high, skills practice is recommended but time is limited. Studies have shown that speakers experience higher levels of anxiety when speaking in L2 as compared to when speaking in their native language. One way to assist L2 learners in managing anxiety and developing confidence to speak is by providing skills practice. Skills practice trains learners on audience analysis, speech organization, effective language use and delivery. With classroom time-constraints this may not be possible or enough. As an alternative to face-to-face instruction, blended learning can be recommended. This paper illustrates a research project aimed at facilitating skills practice for L2 learners in a Public Speaking course at a university in Malaysia. It begins with a description of the blended learning model employed in the study; elaborating on the Web 2.0 tools used in the environment. In addition, the processes in skills practice that the learners went through to produce their persuasive essays are discussed. Finally, learners’ perception of the blended learning environment and skills practice are also reported. Findings show that the learners were positive about both the blended learning environment and skills practice and this shown in the survey administered. Anxiety was also lessened perhaps also due to the environment and practice. In short, the blended learning environment model created with Web 2.0 tools facilitated effective skills practice for the L2 Public Speaking course in which time-constraint is a major factor.
