Methods of Using Onomastics in Teaching Language and Culture

Zhazira Agabekova, Nazarbayev University (Kazakhstan)

Abstract

The onomastic (naming) lexicon of the language can be considered as the value of the people. It is closely connected with the historical-cultural life of the people, as well as with policy, economics, and ordinary social life.

The study of language and culture study is a method of describing language units by researching their principles, including social, cognitive, aesthetic, and spiritual dimensions.

Modern linguistics has been expanding its area of study to consider language as a spiritual and cultural treasure for an ethnic population. The reason for this is that each language is a symbolic system that keeps the national history, language culture, knowledge, character, proficiency, customs and traditions as a whole.  According to such content it is not just a symbolic system, it is also culture.  Because the language here has not only a communicative function, but it is also a means of collecting, preserving, and transforming the unity of one generation for the next.

Traditional structural linguistics is insufficient to study this area of culture. Modern linguistics has actual branches such as cognitive linguistics with lingua culture study based on to discover the national character, national spirit combination of the language and the culture, in other words.

The study of language and culture aims to research the worldview, customs and traditions, and the ethnic identity of a people.   Onomastics plays a substantive role in the history and everyday use of Kazakh language, and is critical for the national education of youth.
