Afia Mahmood, University of Education, Bank Road Campus, Lahore, Pakistan (Pakistan)

Abstract

This study analyzes the needs of the students of private urban schools in Pakistan, their attitude towards the implementation of an E-learning approach and their capacity to adopt it. The sample of the study is taken from the students of grade 8th and O Levels. It discusses the problems faced by these students in learning first language (Urdu), second language (English) and foreign language (French and German). The study determines that the students are not facing substantial problems in learning English language. However, the study reveals that the students are not motivated to learn Urdu language and find the methodologies used to teach this subject uninteresting. They are facing problems mainly in reading and writing of this subject. The foreign language is also quite unpopular among the students and the problems in vocabulary, pronunciation and grammar are faced. To analyze the capacity of the students to adopt E-learning approach their current usage of ICTs in learning at the school and home is checked. The data demonstrates that the usage of technology is frequent among the students at their homes and they have enough capability to adopt E-learning mode for any subject. Contrastingly, the usage of technology at their school is quite limited which is making the learning experience uninteresting and less productive for the students.
