Obioma Bibian Enwere, Department of Nigerian Languages College of Education Akwanga Nasarawa State Nigeria (Nigeria)

Abstract

Multimedia Information Technologies (I.C.Ts), a computer-based technology is rapidly. Changing teaching and learning environments in almost every field, including language. Multimedia I.C.Ts rely on the computer's features and textual manipulations, sound production, graphics, animation and video effects, with communication devices to take effect on language application. Whereas the teaching and learning of the major foreign languages are greatly enhanced by these technologies, little or nothing is happening with ingenuous Nigerian languages (both major and minor ones), about 500 of them. This paper highlights some of the benefits of I.C.T on teaching and learning of the major world languages and advocates the application of such on the indigenous Nigerian languages. It also highlights some of the challenges faced in documenting the indigenous Nigerian languages, and advocates the development of software for their documentation and graphization to enhance their status among the world's major languages.
