What is Foreign Language Learning for me?

Fatma Özlem Saka, Akdeniz University (Turkey)

Abstract

English is taught as a foreign language in Turkey and started at 2nd grade in primary school. As the topic of education is teaching a language, the educational process will include teaching all language skills and students should use the language oral or written to improve that they learn the language. In this aspect, learning a foreign language is quite different from other subjects taught at school. 5th grade students already have some learning habits for other subjects at school and this is their fourth year in the process of English learning. Therefore, they are expected to have some ideas and thoughts for language courses. Believing that affective factors are as important as cognitive factors in learning processes, students’ ideas and thoughts should be taken into account to improve the success of students in foreign language learning.

This study is believed to reflect how much the students are aware of the fact that they are learning a foreign language and what their ideas and thoughts are about the language learning process. In the study, 245 students at 5th grade from 3 different primary schools were given a questionnaire to get the information. Their answers were examined in SPSS. As a result of the study, it can be said that students have positive feelings towards learning a language. They are aware of the fact that they are learning a language and they are enthusiastic to use the language in conversations.
