Abstract
Vocabulary building is an important aspect in language learning. It is through the learning of new vocabulary that language learners are able to communicate, read and comprehend text. More often than not, vocabulary building is seen as a daunting task for many language learners, especially the low progress learners. This feat can impede their language learning ability and demotivate learners in language learning. Thus, it is vital that effective vocabulary strategies are used to motivate language learners to learn vocabulary and instill confidence in effectively using the new words learnt. The study aims to investigate the types of vocabulary strategies that will motivate low progress learners in the learning of the English Language and the impact of ICT tools in vocabulary building. The data was collected from 90 low progress learners in two secondary schools in Singapore. The finding reveals that using ICT tools in the English Language classroom can excite and motivate low progress learners to acquire new vocabulary. It is also noted that ICT tools can be used to complement other offline vocabulary building strategies to further enhance the English language classroom.
