Abstract

The goal of CAMELOT is to equip language teachers with the know-how to learn the techniques of producing videos of language learning conversations in 3D environments / virtual worlds.

The technology in focus is machinima, which by definition is the use of real-time 3D computer graphics, such as video games or virtual worlds, to create cinematic productions. Machinima is a neologism derived from machine and cinema. The actors are avatars and the stage is computer generated imagery. The camera is a screen recording software and these productions are lean and cost-effective. These Video-Podcasts (Vodcasts) are the natural successor to podcasts and the genre digital storytelling meets a creative and popular environment, namely 3D graphics.

CAMELOT takes up the challenge of and purposes to train and equip language teachers to produce visually appealing authentic conversations.

Videos recorded in 3D environments are of great value  a) by keeping the anonymity of the speakers behind the avatars and b) by providing culturally and visually rich settings in these 3D environments, are c) lean productions and conversations with 2 or more persons are easier to create.

Language teachers are given the ability to create blended learning material which is attractive for students and they learn to record their conversation.

At the very end of the 2-year EU funded project CAMELOT, the consortium consisting of the University of Central Lancester (UK), Istanbul University (TR), University of West Bohemia (CzR), National Defense University (PL), ICC The Internat. Language Ass.(D), let's talk online (B), LinguaTV (D) and EduActive (PL) are setting out to summarize the project results.
