Abstract

The implementation of new devices, techniques and methods for second language (L2) teaching and learning is a challenge that makes scholars rethink the future of schools. The use of tablets as a helping tool to second language learning (2LL) could entail, a priori, positive changes. This study is focused on the analysis of the influence of the use of tablets (iPad mainly) on the emotions and the affective factors that take part in second language acquisition (SLA) contexts. Data have been gathered through two complementary mechanisms: first, personal classroom observation of the researchers, and then a series of interviews and questionnaires was established to contrast the first set of information collected. The content of these templates, interviews and questionnaires have been validated according to the Delphi method. Data were discussed by the researchers and the conclusions will lead us to state that the use of such devices might imply either a success or a defeat (as emotional values) for the development of pupils’ skills when learning a second language.

Keywords: tablets, second language learning, emotions, affective factors.
