Aleksandra Maryniak, Opole University, Poland (Poland)

Abstract

In the presentation, the author aims at showing how multimodal input modalities can enhance foreign language acquisition from the perspective of the available body of research as well as her own teaching experience. The multimodal content, which allows for simultaneous use of different channels, be it eyes or ears, has already been proven to have a beneficial role in the literacy development of children, teenagers, and adults. From the perspective of teaching a foreign language, such an approach is commonly applied and its advantages are shown in the contemporary studies.

Being an active English teacher of all age groups allows the author to share some examples of how audiobooks, songs with lyrics as well as subtitled films can be implemented into the process of learning a foreign language from the practical point of view. Theories concerning reading while listening approach, according to which content is acquired via more than one channel at once and thus constitutes a perfect example of a multimodal setting, are listed. Moreover, some web pages that are helpful in teaching with the use of the above-mentioned approaches are shown and possible techniques of applying them on a daily basis in the educational setting are given.
