An Investigation on the Strategies of Undergraduates’ English Vocabulary Learning

English vocabulary is the foundation of the English language, and has become the priority among priorities of English learners' learning and drawn their attentions. Generally speaking, vocabulary and its usages which are mastered by a student have a positive relationship with the student’s English marks. In English teaching, vocabulary has been more and more important. By the author’s class-observations we can know that teachers usually put the vocabulary teaching on the first place. Only when the students master the vocabulary can the teachers continue teaching the following teaching contents.

On the theoretical level, cognitive psychological theories, constructivist learning theory, and the word-formation theory in linguistics are still influencing and guiding the English teaching and learning. Therefore, according to these three theories and practical situation, the author compiled a questionnaire. The questionnaires were given to 150 freshmen. The author used software SPSS 21.0 to analyze the data from questionnaire and then got the results on how to use learning strategies when a student recites words. Meanwhile, the author had class-observations and personal interviews to these 150 students, which provides a realistic evidence to this study. Finally, the author gave some advice to students and teachers according to the problems found in the survey.
