Yesim Kesli Dollar, Bahcesehir University (Turkey)

Abstract

The study tries to explore the K-5 students’ attitudes toward the use of technology, namely digital web tools,  in English classrooms, and also this study tries to find whether gender, age, year of exposure to English have an effect on students’ attitudes toward the use of technology in language classes.

In the 21st century, technology provides EFL learners and teachers with various sources of information and various tools to apply in their educational life.   Some technological tools or web programs such as digital cameras, software, online programs for voice recording, video recording, etc., help learners to enlarge their capacity to create stories, write better, read critically, speak fluently, and become more proficient in language. Many studies reported that because there is an increase in the use of computers and other technology at home and school environment, there is a need to study students’ attitudes toward learning languages with the help of technology.  The present study tries to explore the K-5 students’ attitudes toward the use of technology, namely digital web tools,  in English classrooms, and also this study tries to find whether gender, age, year of exposure to English have an effect on students’ attitudes toward the use of technology in language classes.  75 students learning English at a private primary school participated in this study.  The students were given the Student Technology Survey.  Some open-ended questions were also added to the survey; practice and likes/dislikes questions about the use of digital web tools in the language classroom.  The findings showed that students have positive attitudes toward the use of technology to learn language and they are motivated to make use of technology in their language classes; however, some differences have been found in terms of gender, age, and the year of exposure.
