Multilingual Behavior of Pesantren IMMIM’s Students at Makassar

Abstract
Language behavior is a mental attitude in selecting and using language in variety of situations that can be seen at Pesantren (boarding school) IMMIM of Makassar which applied multilingual. This study aimed to determine the pattern of language choice in a variety of situations that include language choice patterns of the Indonesian, Arabic, English and regional languages. In addition, this study also intended to get complete and thorough overview of the linguistic phenomena that occurred at Pesantren IMMIM of Makassar.
This study used qualitative descriptive design that implemented structural theories. This procedure produced descriptive data in the form of written and spoken words from the students and their behaviors that can be observed. The data collection techniques used in this research is observation, interview, documentation, and questionnaire that contain students’ language activities.
Based on the results and discussion, the researcher concluded that the use of language at Pesantren IMMIM occurred linguistic events using multilingual namely Indonesian, Arabic, English and local languages according to the purpose of the interaction. This is due to language behavior occurred in a variety of domains. The domain is seen as a constellation of factors such as location, topic, and participants.
