A Computer Game for Teaching Young Students

Carlos Oliveira, IFRJ (Brazil)

Abstract

This paper presents our on-going work of the development of a computer game. We aim to use such a game to deliver educational content to student. Our focus are the young students as they are the major consumer of computer games. In this work we present the products (tools) we are using on the development of the game.

The motivation for this work comes from the great interest of the young audience for computer applications, specifically for computer games. This great interest in computer games opens up opportunities for the development of games that aim to teach educational content in a playful way. Currently, some games suffer some prejudice about his alleged role merely entertainment. And many of these give a negative view they deal with violent or controversial issues in general, something that society sees as a bad influence. However, this presentation of educational content through a computer game makes the player (student) takes pleasure in learning content. Thus, learning does not become boring or tiresome, however, the student takes pleasure in the game and learning becomes a natural consequence of the act of playing.

This project is already underway and the third-party game is being developed from scratch. No part of the game is being harnessed in other games. The whole idea and development of the game is unique. We are already working in game development and we intend to finish this in the next months.

The story of the game takes place on Earth after an alien have an accident with your ship and end up falling on our planet. In their search for the key parts of your vehicle, the character ends up going through the most different points of our planet, and with it, taking in a bit of our culture. Therefore, the aim of the game is to find the parts of nature. During this quest, the player will go through different cities on the planet. When the character passes by Rio de Janeiro, for example, the player gets information about the city's history, climate, traditional festivals, among other information that helps the player to know the city. The music that is being played in the game will also vary depending on the city where this player. A song that is popular in the city where the character will be played this game.

As would be impractical to make music and graphics with information about every city, we will focus on major world cities such as New York, Rio de Janeiro, London, Paris, Berlin, Rome, Jerusalem, Moscow, Tokyo, Beijing and Sydney.

We believe that the game can be used to facilitate the approach of some subjects in disciplines such as history and geography. Furthermore, the game can be changed and used to facilitate the assimilation of other subjects.
