Abstract
Language skills play important roles in students’ success in learning English. This is especially true to the students of English Education Study Program, Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, Sriwijaya University. These students not only learn English as their foreign language where exposure to use English in their daily life is scarce. At the same time, they need to master it for their future career as teachers of English. One of the basic language skills they need to master is reading since a good reading ability will certainly open the gate to the new world outside. One of he predictors to a good ability in reading is metacognitive awareness which help the readers understand the text.
This paper tries to discuss the correlation between metacognitive awareness and reading comprehension achievement of the students. Test and questionnaire were distributed to 113 students at the study program. To verify the data, correlation analysis was run. The results of the study demonstrates that there is a significant correlation between the two variables. This implies that metacognitive awareness of students should be developed in order that they could comprehend texts better.
