Abstract
Task-based activities provide an avenue for language learning and the building of cultural awareness in as authentic manner as possible within an academic setting. World of Diversity is a Virtual Learning Environment which provides a safe, academic environment in which K-16 students have an opportunity to practice second language skills while gaining cultural knowledge through reading, building, exploring, discussing, and collaborating on projects with other individuals in their own class or with others from other schools and Universities. The present study will discuss a pilot project conducted over a two year period in which beginning second language learners of Spanish used World of Diversity as part of a series of hybrid courses. We will consider the use and design of task-based activities for language learning, describe, comment on, and analyze some initial results of the pilot study, and reflect upon students' reactions to the use of technology, more specifically, to the use of World of Diversity.
