Disruptive Technologies in the Online Language Learning Environment

Abstract

This paper will analyze the impact of two disruptive technologies impacting foreign language today. This presentation will address the impact of Adaptive Learning approach through Duolingo.com website and Massive Online Open Courses (MOOC) in spanishmooc.com, as well main publishers development of flipped classroom approaches.  Adaptive learning promises to make a significant contribution to improving retention, measuring student learning, aiding the achievement of better outcomes, and improving pedagogy. Adaptive Learning is intelligent software that learns from the student’s behavior in order to deliver an individualized curriculum for every learner. Data is used to make predictions of student performance, types of tasks, comparison and curricular changes. As a result, a better utilization of class time, following a flipped classroom approach, will result in better rates of completion and student success. Other major factor impacting higher education in America is the role of online massive education (commonly called MOOCS) capable of attracting thousands of students from existing institutions and new and emerging economies, such as spanishmooc.com This presentation will provide an overview of these two pedagogical approaches,as well as to indicate levels of students satisfactions, applicability in college education and future approaches.
