Yvonne Pratt-Johnson

Yvonne Pratt-Johnson is Professor of Education (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages [TESOL]) and Chair of the Department of Education Specialties at St. John’s University. She currently teaches courses in education and linguistics.

Among her teaching and research interests are first and second language acquisition; literacy development for first and second language learners; and English-based Creoles and the teaching of dialect-different students. She has also made conference presentations and conducted workshops in Europe, Asia, Africa, and Latin America. In addition, Dr. Pratt-Johnson has published in numerous national and international educational journals; contributed chapters to books; and has received several academic awards and honors.

In 2011 and 2013, respectively, Professor Pratt-Johnson received Fulbright-Hays Awards for research projects allowing her to take groups of New York City school teachers to Vietnam. In 2015 she received a third Fulbright-Hays Award to take another group of New York City teachers to India, from where a growing number of students in the New York City public schools have come.

Professor Pratt-Johnson received a B.A. degree in Spanish/Secondary Education from Stony Brook University; an M.S. degree in Spanish/Linguistics from Georgetown University; and her M.A. (TESOL); MS.Ed (TESOL); and Ed.D (Spanish Education/TESOL) degrees from Teachers College, Columbia University.
