The Effect of Visual Materials Usage on Increasing Motivation in Primary School Art Lessons

Abstract

The overall aim of this study is to determine the effect of material usage on increasing motivation in primary school art lesson. The research was carried out on sixty students who were studying in 4-A and 4-B classes of Aziz Gül Primary School in 2013-2014 education year. In the research some materials are used for 9-10 year-old-students such as chrominance, applications about colors, kolaj and asamblaj, t-shirt painting, sculptures, art history Works and drawing with music. The study was carried out according to model of pretest and posttest experiment groups. The motivation scale of visual art developed by Glynn et al. (2007) and Glynn et al. (2009) is used to measure the effect of materials on motivation in art lessons. The scale which includes six main components and 30 items was translated into Turkish and its reliability is ensured by using factor analysis. For validity of the scale, expert opinion was taken.

The data which is provided by the scale of Glynn et al. (2007) and Glynn et al. (2009) was analyzed by SPSS package programmer.  According to analysis, material usage in primary school has a supportive feature to increase the motivation and this support may change according to varieties.
