Sport climbing is a physical activity that consists of continuous actions of climbing artificial or natural rock wall using the upper and lower part of their bodies, and it is reported that sport climbing has a positive effect on physical and mental health. However, indoor sport climbing may have limitation in interest because of repeated movement in a limited space with a simple artificial rock wall. In addition, leaders should let the learners to understand an action by showing them the exact one, but in the actual site it is difficult to perform simultaneous climbing movement on the same artificial rock wall.
Mixed reality technology can be utilized to solve these problems. In physical education there had been studies about the effects of mobility learning and feedback utilizing mixed reality technology. Projection mapping is a kind of area mixed reality, and it is a technique of analyzing the three-dimensional features on the surface of an object and showing an image different from the original physical form by projecting and merging an image made of light. Particularly, variety of contents can be easily applied on vertical sport climbing artificial rock wall using projection mapping. In this case, if the leaders implement virtual reality by the projection of character animations that give a cubic effect and reality, it will trigger concentration and interest of learners and improve learning efficiency by making them to perform learning actively. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to develop a character animation system based on mixed reality and apply it to indoor climbing education.
