The effects and the significance of literary texts as authentic materials in EFL classes have been discussed and analysed for years. The merits of using literature in EFL classes cannot be denied. With the help of the instructor, the learner can examine, question, analyse and decree the literary texts. Literary texts can be used as instruments to unearth new perspectives and interpretations on the part of the learner. In this perspective, literature is essential for linguistic competence, student motivation, involvement and cultural enhancement. The main aim of this study is to show that the integration of literary texts into learning and teaching process is possible and has multifaceted advantages. This paper sough to provide an answer to the question ‘Why is literature beneficial in EFL Classes?’ whilst exemplifying the process with James Joyce’s “Eveline”. The objectives of the sample lesson model and its activities are (1) activating students’ schemata (2) enhancing students’ confidence and self-esteem, (3) motivating students toward reading a literary text. When the text and its tasks are level appropriate, using literary texts as authentic materials will be engaging and effective both for the teachers and the students.
