The research focuses on investigating the items of lexical cohesion in literary texts from discourse analysis point of view. Lexical cohesion refers to the way in which words and phrases are related to each other in a text, contributing to its overall meaning and coherence. Lexical cohesion also is a crucial aspect of textual coherence that refers to the connections between words and phrases within a text. It plays a significant role in how meaning is constructed and understood. Halliday (1985) classifies the types of lexical cohesion: Repetition, synonyms, collocations, metonymy, hyponymy, superordination. The research aims to identify the items of lexical cohesion in “ The Great Gatsby” novel by F. Scott Fitzgerald. The model of the study has been adopted from Halliday (1985) and its types as it has just mentioned. The study tackles 11 questions of “ The Great Gatsby” novel as data for analysis. The outline of the research contains from introduction, literature review, methods of research with analysis, and conclusion with references. The results show that the frequency of repetition and metonymy is 3, and the frequency of synonyms is 2, which the frequency of the rest items is 1.
