Hanwei Cheng; Yijie Wang

Abstract

Teacher emotions have strong connections with students’ academic performances and school activities. Based on literature review, we clarify the definition of emotional competence and emotional intelligence, so that it helps us have a clear understanding of teacher emotions. By regarding teacher emotions as a social and cultural construct, many frameworks have been developed, including emotional geographies, emotional genealogies, emotional epistemologies and so on. If we want to conceptualize emotion, it is appropriate to connect emotion with leadership, and within it, there are three important qualities (emotional regulation, emotional decision making and the certain emotional context) connect with leadership, so leaders using emotional leadership can manage school from emotional experience that result from personal professional development. Teacher emotions play significant roles both in classrooms and in interaction with leaders and other colleagues, so we need to learn something from practice, such as work satisfaction, and studies concerning work satisfaction show that high emotional competence leads to a high level of work satisfaction, and positive emotions have many benefits in varied aspects, including social support, empathy and so on. To help us understand meanings of emotions in schools, it is necessary to reconstruct and reform teacher emotions, and leaders should consider emotional dimensions during the change and restore its status.
