BRIGHTS Project: Digital Storytelling as a Useful Tool for Promoting Global Citizenship Education

Sara Cella; Federica Funghi

Abstract

The globalized and increasing connected world calls for the need to promote democratic values and to develop transversal key competences such as learning to learn, sense of initiative, social, civic and cultural competences.
Teaching and learning these skills require innovative approaches that go beyond the boundaries of specific subjects and take into consideration each student through a holistic perspective, looking at his/her personal learning and social context and development.
To reach this goal, BRIGHTS, a two-year project co-funded under the Erasmus+ Programme,  promotes the use of digital storytelling that has proven to be a powerful learning tool by improving creativity, digital literacy and critical thinking.
The project develops through an integrated learning path aimed at enabling teachers and trainers to create digital stories on Global Citizenship Education with youngsters, both in formal and non-formal educational contexts.  The primary target group is composed of secondary school teachers and youth trainers from the four partner countries - Italy, Belgium, Greece, Croatia - who will benefit from national tutors' support during their learning; the youngsters are the final beneficiaries of the whole process.
In early 2018, more than 400 teachers and trainers benefited from the MOOC “Addressing Global Citizenship Education through Digital Storytelling”, delivered in national languages: Italian, Dutch, Greek and Croatian. Later on, at least 25 teachers and trainers per country were selected to take part in face to face training made of practical sessions enabling teachers to create digital stories on Global Citizenship Education with youngsters.  The stories created by youngsters, in cooperation with their teachers and trainers,  will  compete in the Contest “BRIGHTS Awards: best digital story on Global Citizenship topics” that will give the authors the chance to participate in the final project’s event to be held in Brussels.  An international jury will select the four best national stories and the best European story.
Evidence of the effectiveness of the BRIGHTS approach, which builds on Digital Storytelling as an innovative tool to promote Global Citizenship Education, will be given to the wider audience through the online publication of all BRIGHTS digital stories.
