Design and Practice of Social Implementation Education in Engineering Education

Akiyuki Minamide; Kazuya Takemata

Abstract

An education method that require social implementation are important for engineering education. Therefore, in Japan, innovation education has come to be implemented in cooperation with society. This education is advanced active learning because students need to find social problems and build solutions. This research describes a social implementation project of product development using a special sticker that can be freely stuck and peeled off in the 4th grade of the International College of Technology, Kanazawa.

The project themes implemented by the students were narrowed down to a single theme set by a company without any theme chosen by society as a whole, for the convenience of teacher's class management. The theme was set by the company to develop a new toy with a special sticker for children using casual restaurant with the cooperation of Well-Corporation, a printing company in Hakusan City. In casual restaurants in Japan, simple toys for children may be prepared to attract new customers and to gain repeaters. In this project, we aim to propose products using special stickers instead.

Special stickers can be pasted and removed as many times as you like, making cards, simple dolls, paper crafts without using scissors and glue. Students aimed to develop original toys and promotional tools using this special sticker. Students examined the casual restaurant and the users who use it first to consider the products using this sticker. Students examine a lot of information such as the age of the user who uses the restaurant, the time to order the food, the waiting time for the food to arrive, how to spend the waiting time, and based on the information, the waiting time for the cooking Invented a toy that children can play with. Through these processes, students can develop their ability to find problems, investigate data, and analyze data.

Several new ideas were proposed by the students, prototypes were made, and improvements were made while confirming the feeling of use, and many of them were well received by printing company engineers. In particular, not only using this sticker as it is, the idea that a child could be assembled as a paper craft after being colored freely with a colored pencil on a sticker was highly evaluated. This idea was further examined by a printing company engineer and actually commercialized. Students were very pleased that their ideas came out to society as real products, and from the results of the questionnaire survey after the end of the project, students were able to think more deeply and maintain high motivation with this teaching method It became clear.
