The development of skills and readiness for lifelong learning is a basic objective of modern education programs. One of the strategies for developing STEM skills – project-based learning provides visible results on some generic skills related to self-regulated independent learning. The article discusses results from research on project-based learning and findings about the indirect link between the design of academic courses and the quality of the achieved learning outcomes for students. In addition, the results of the surveys show support for the ideas of learning which provokes a desire for self- actualization of the students and lifelong learning. This investigation reveal that project based education is an educational method by which students perform, revise and develop their skills related to communication, information sharing and management. Differences in students’ perceptions and understanding of what project based learning is about are fundamental to how they approach their research in the learning process and the results of their learning. These differences are also a prerequisite for the degree of awareness of personal responsibility and the need for active action by trainees to build a successful lifelong learning strategy.
