There Is No App for That - Adjusting Science Education to Engage and Motivate Generation Z

Ania Harlick; Maria Halleran

Abstract

During next few years universities will be populated by the students whose life span in shorter than that of the internet. What was learned and adopted by Generation Y is a reality that Generation Z grew up in.  They are used to knowledge being one click away, they are hard to impress but are up for challenges, have high expectations of themselves and value feedback. As a research subject representatives of Generation Z are limited by their age due to the fact that the oldest of them are only starting university education now.

The life goals, plans and ambitions of the “i-gens” differ from those that characterized their predecessors. They are most likely to revaluate the importance of knowledge and redefine the gravity of professional training. They are said to be the ones who will alter the university education, first as students and then as educators themselves. The burning question is, how can education, and, in particular, science education adapt so it can transform to accommodate while keeping its integrity and premise.
