Rendering ESP Teaching more Effective

Mohammed Ali Talha, University Center of Ain Temouchent (Algeria)

Abstract

My presentation will be about rendering the ESP teaching more effective based on my personal experience as an ESP teacher. In it I will tackle the following points:

- Choosing the right teacher for learners. Some teachers are only excellent at working with elementary or pre-intermediate learners. Others do a great job only when working with upper-intermediate or advanced learners. This procedure help teachers develop the real skills needed to get elementary and pre-intermediate learners to upper levels. It also keeps teachers focused on working with students having approximately the same level rather than having to shift from one level to its extreme.
- Designing a special syllabus based on the learners’ needs. Sometimes readymade material may cause a loss of motivation as it may not meet the real needs of the learner/learners. In most cases, language schools cannot afford to design a specific syllabus for a given learner/learners. Therefore, in such cases, the teacher’s creativity is desperately required to adapt the challenging situation by adding extra material and dealing with the learners with objectives to be attained in mind.
- Highlighting the importance of teaching grammar for ESP learners. Lots of ESP learners pay no attention to learning grammar and thus they are to be made aware of how grammar can make them true fluent speakers.
- Managing the schedules according to the learners' capacities of grasping knowledge. For some two hours per week are enough while some others prefer to learn with the utmost intensity.
