Improving Writing: The Role of ChatGPT and Peer Noticing (Students Writing 500-word essays)
Mart Christine Johnston, Takushoku University (Japan)
Abstract
This presentation discusses how ChatGPT and peer noticing can be integrated to improve students’ writing skills. The software is used as a post-writing tool only in university classrooms in Japan for writing a series of 500-word essays. The writing activities are in pen-and-paper format to prevent students from solely relying on ChatGPT or using translation applications. Students are paired and given writing tasks in four activities. Each pair produces a 500-word essay within one hour. Possible topics are announced the week before the writing activity. Before returning their essays, their errors are carefully noted down to observe whether they avoid making the same mistakes in subsequent tasks. In the subsequent week, students are provided with a specific ChatGPT prompt aimed at identifying and rectifying errors in their writing, which they record. Additionally, each pair discusses their errors. Furthermore, to encourage more English-speaking opportunities, each student is asked to share at least one lesson learned from ChatGPT with the entire class. Throughout all four activities, topics and grammar focus are similar, such as 'advantages and disadvantages of X', to monitor their progress more easily. Moving forward, by the end of the semester, all four written outputs will be analyzed, and the study will determine whether ChatGPT and peer noticing have helped achieve the goal.
