Code-Mixing in Thai Speaking by Laos YouTubers

Abstract

Speaking Thai is a popular of Lao people as the Thai language is gainful for studying and working in Thailand. Code-mixing is linguistic phenomenon when the multilingual speaking other languages that the first language will be mixed in second language. So, code- mixing occurs by Laos bilingual in daily speech as well as youtubers. This article reveals code-mixing in speaking Thai by Laos YouTubers. Data were collected from video clips of 5 YouTube channels published in 2022-2023 and they speak Thai language is main language on channels. The research framework is linguistics focusing on code- mixing and is qualitative research. The results indicate that there are 3 characteristics of mixing: lexicon, morphology, and phonology. The cognate lexicons are mixed in different meaning. The morphology and corresponding sounds are pronounced mix, especially lexical mixing with different vowel sounds between the two languages. Lao YouTubers learned Thai on their own through exposure to Thai media and living in Thailand. The results of this research therefore reflect the Thai language skills of Lao people.
