Blended Learning and Student Autonomy

Irene Bijo Abraham, Mahatma Gandhi University (India)

Abstract

Blended Learning is an educational approach that combines traditional face- to-face instruction with online learning. It has been found that use of blended learning significantly aids in developing learner’s capacity to set goals, choose appropriate learning strategies, monitor their progress and reflect on its outcomes. It enables student’s active, self- directed engagement in the learning process. Blended learning, by integrating digital resources along with traditional classroom activities offers learners the chance to access materials at their pace and take ownership of their learning. The following study contributes to the growing body of research on blended learning by highlighting the ways in which it helps foster student autonomy. As education gets integrated with digital technology, it’s quite significant to address the ways in which blended learning can help enhance independent learning, motivation and self- regulation among students. Through a comprehensive review of existing literature, the study identifies the best practices that can be incorporated for designing blended learning environments. Additionally, it also seeks to offer recommendations to educators on how to implement blended learning models that prioritize student autonomy.
