Abstract
Integrating transversality in the teaching and learning of English for Specific Purposes (ESP) seems to be highly important, because it emphasizes the development of skills that are adaptable across various academic and professional contexts. Transversal skills, also known as basic, core, transferable or soft skills, may be defined as versatile abilities that can be applied across a wide range of jobs, academic fields, and life situations (European Commission, 2022). They are considered to be the cornerstone for the personal development of a person. Through ESP, students not only learn language specific to their fields but also cultivate transversal skills, such as critical thinking, problem-solving, collaboration, and adaptability. These skills enhance learners’ ability to apply language knowledge effectively in real-world contexts, bridging linguistic competence with professional and academic demands. By fostering transversal skills alongside ESP, students become better equipped to adapt to diverse challenges, work across disciplines, and meet the demands of their future careers. This presentation showcases tasks, activities, or projects that encourage the development of transversal skills within the ESP curriculum. The presentation particularly shows examples of materials designed for the teaching of ESP undergraduate courses at tertiary level, particularly in the fields of Communication and Internet Studies, Civil Engineering and Geomatics, Rehabilitation Studies, as well Hotel and Tourism management. Overall the talk provides the theoretical background for both ESP and transversal skills, while it also demonstrates examples of tasks or activities that promote/ incorporate transversality in the context of the university language classroom.
