Artificial Intelligence and English Language Teaching at Secondary School Level

Joan Kosowska-Pikos, educational expert, teacher trainer, (Poland)

Abstract

The objective of this study is to explore how teachers, headteachers/school leaders, students and parents perceive AI in process of English learning and teaching. Is it considered as an integral feature of their work, or is it perceived as more than a hindrance (or threat) than a help. The current study uses online/face to face focus group interviews and questionnaires for data collection in order to gain insight into experience (and practice) of the target group. The study participants are teachers and school leaders from five Polish secondary schools in Malopolska region, who agreed to take part in the research. Despite its limitations (as the study`s conclusion cannot be generalised because it was conducted on a selected sample); the study offers some insight into the practice of using AI on everyday basis. The study focuses on the opportunities, concerns, and challenges that AI (including the ethics surrounding the use of AI – both by teachers and students) introduces to English language teaching and learning; presented from the different perspectives of groups involved.
