Beyond the Game: An Expressive Speech Acts Analysis of Football Fan Interactions in YouTube Comments on the ASEAN Mitsubishi Electric Cup 2024

Abstract
Football in the ASEAN region functions not only as a sport but also as a symbol of cultural identity, national pride, and regional solidarity. With YouTube serving as a prominent arena for fan interaction, online comments provide rich linguistic data for understanding cross-cultural perceptions and emotional engagement. This study investigates expressive speech acts in fan comments on the ASEAN Mitsubishi Electric Cup 2024, drawing on Searle’s (1979) speech act theory, particularly the category of expressives. Data were collected from the ASEAN United FC YouTube channel, extracted and cleaned to ensure relevance, and then analyzed through qualitative methods, supported by corpus verification with AntConc and expert validation. The study addresses three main questions: (1) What types of expressive speech acts are employed by football fans? (2) How do these acts reflect cultural values, identities, and emotions? and (3) How do they shape online interactions and intercultural relations in the ASEAN context? Findings are expected to extend pragmatic research into digital sports discourse, reveal sociolinguistic insights into fan identity and solidarity, and highlight the role of digital communication in fostering both rivalry and unity. The results also offer practical implications for sports organizations and media practitioners in promoting constructive online fan engagement.
