Aimkamon Bunmee, University of Michigan (United States)

Abstract

This presentation explores innovative proficiency assessments for Thai language learning, integrating a multifaceted digital approach to ethical pedagogy. It will provide an overview of the development of listening proficiency assessments for Thai learners and their impact on curriculum and teaching methods, including incorporating digital tools and utilizing inclusive approaches. The presenter will share examples from specific lessons and discuss the challenges encountered during the assessment design process as well as how these new approaches enhanced language teaching and learning, with impacts including improved learning engagement and accessibility. The presentation will conclude with future plans, including how the Thai team intends to further enhance listening assessment methods and integrate them into their broader instructional strategy, considering the role of digital diversity and ethical considerations in these efforts. The presentation aims to share best practices and innovative approaches in developing proficiency assessments for Southeast Asian LCTLs. It will also highlight the role of digital diversity in creating inclusive and effective language pedagogy and address ethical considerations in the design and implementation of digital language materials. The presentation will open up room for exploring the cross-linguistic applications of these approaches, including identifying how best practices in one language group can inform practices and strategies when working in and with other languages.
