Using ChatGPT to Enhance EFL Learners’ Vocabulary: An Experiential Perspective in AI-Supported Language Development
Necla Arlic, Zayed University (United Arab Emirates)
Abstract
Learning new vocabulary is a crucial component of studying English as a Foreign Language (EFL). Vocabulary acquisition facilitates learners’ listening, speaking, reading, and writing competencies by serving as a critical foundation for obtaining language input and output effectively (Nation, 2001). Empirical evidence indicates that learners’ vocabulary breadth is not only a strong predictor of academic achievement but also a reliable measure of overall linguistic proficiency (Schmitt, 2010). In the context of the United Arab Emirates, where English is studied as a foreign language, many learners encounter challenges in acquiring advanced lexical knowledge, which can impede academic performance and language development. In this session, the presenter will share her experiences working directly with undergraduate EFL learners as they explored ChatGPT to expand their vocabulary and practice using words in meaningful contexts. Participants will hear firsthand accounts of how learners engaged with ChatGPT as a patient and supportive learning partner. Learners experimented with new words, practiced using them in conversations and exercises, and received immediate, personalized feedback, which helped them build confidence and stay motivated. The session will present detailed examples of learner activities, including contextualized exercises and conversational applications as well as learners’ reflections on their progress, emphasizing the ways in which ChatGPT provided consistent, judgment-free support. Attendees will gain practical insights from these experiences, seeing firsthand how AI tools can make language learning more interactive, flexible, and accessible for students of varying proficiency levels. By attending, participants will leave with actionable strategies and ideas to integrate AI-powered tools like ChatGPT into their classrooms, providing learners with opportunities for self-directed and engaging language practice.
