From AI Detection to AI Literacy: Redesigning Language Education for an AI-Enabled World
María González Davis, Oxford College of Emory University (United States)
Abstract
Generative artificial intelligence is transforming language education, requiring educators to rethink not only how students learn but also how they demonstrate learning. Rather than focusing on detecting AI use or prohibiting these tools, language educators have an opportunity to redesign courses that cultivate AI literacy alongside linguistic, intercultural, and critical thinking skills.
This presentation introduces a practical framework for integrating AI into language teaching through authentic, communicative, and ethically grounded learning experiences. Participants will explore how carefully designed AI-supported activities can promote meaningful language use, increase student engagement, and strengthen higher-order thinking while preserving academic integrity. Classroom examples will include AI-assisted conversation practice, intercultural analysis, collaborative writing, reflective learning, and assessment redesign that emphasizes process, creativity, and human judgment rather than simple content production.
The presentation argues that the goal of language education is not to graduate students who simply know how to use AI. Rather, our responsibility is to graduate students who know when, why, and how to work with AI ethically, critically, and creatively to communicate effectively and solve real-world problems across languages and cultures. AI literacy is therefore understood not as technical proficiency, but as the ability to exercise sound judgment while collaborating with intelligent technologies.
Participants will leave with adaptable classroom activities, assessment strategies, prompt-design techniques, and a practical framework for developing AI literacy as an essential component of communicative competence. Although the examples are drawn from world language education, the framework is transferable across disciplines and supports institutional efforts to prepare graduates for an AI-enabled future in which human creativity, ethical reasoning, cultural understanding, and critical judgment remain indispensable.
