Debunking Race and Gender Stereotypes in a Greek EFL Classroom Setting through Project-based Lessons Based on Historical Events

Aikaterini Tsilimpari, Hellenic American University (Greece)

Abstract

Project-based learning (PjBL) is a comprehensive instructional approach that enables students to develop new skills while strengthening existing ones through engagement with authentic contexts. Research in English as a Second Language (ESL) education has emphasised the value of exposing learners to real-world language use, fostering collaboration, and engaging them in research processes that require them to evaluate information critically rather than receive it passively.
This study examines a PjBL intervention designed to raise EFL teenagers’ awareness of significant historical events, develop their critical-thinking skills, and challenge established stereotypes related to race and gender.
The participants were ten students aged 12–14, including boys and girls from diverse social and cultural backgrounds, who attended Greek secondary schools. They completed four project-based lessons centred on historical events. The lessons aimed to develop real-life and research skills through collaborative projects and topic-based research assignments. Videos, short talks, and films related to the selected events were incorporated to motivate learners and sustain engagement.
After the lessons, data were collected through qualitative questionnaires and focus-group discussions. Students’ comments about their skill development and participation in the project were examined using qualitative content analysis.
The findings indicate that historically grounded PjBL can increase students’ engagement with English both inside and outside the classroom. The intervention also promoted teamwork and collaboration, strengthened presentation skills, and encouraged students to reconsider attitudes towards racism and gender discrimination.
The study suggests that EFL teachers should integrate project-based lessons centred on historical events into their curricula. It also identifies implications for future research and classroom practice.
