Extent of Human Resource Management Practices of the Faculty Members of Mindanao State University- General Santos City: Bases for Human Resource Development Program

Abstract

 

The study aimed to design a Human Resource Development Program for Mindanao State University - General Santos City as a result of human resource management practices in terms of (a) organizational purpose (b) organizational structure (c) organizational leadership (d) organizational relationship (e) organizational reward (f) organizational helpful mechanism and (g) organizational attitude towards change. The study utilizes the research –developmental method in developing a human resource development program for Mindanao State University- General Santos City.

The respondents of this study were the one hundred thirty (130) currently employed faculty members of Mindanao State University- General Santos City during the School Year 2012-2013, and were selected using systematic random sampling. This comprises thirteen (13) from the College of Agriculture, thirteen (13) from the College of Business Administration and Accountancy, seven (7) from the College of Education, twenty-one (21) from the College of Engineering, eight (8) from the College of Fisheries, thirty (30) from the College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics and thirty-eight (38) from the College of Social Sciences and Humanities.

The adapted questionnaire was administered to the said respondents. The data gathered were collected, tabulated and analyzed using mean, weighted mean, Pearson correlation coefficient and ANOVA single factor analysis which are used as statistical tools.

The extent of human resource management practices of Mindanao State University-General Santos City is highly implemented and exceeds the ordinary standards with a weighted mean result of 2.53 (Agree). Also, there is a significant difference on the resource management practices of the university across different colleges with (F-computed = 2.405) which is greater than the (F-tabulated = 2.13) at 0.5 level of significance which means that the colleges have different organizational practices and behaviours that affect the organizational functioning. Moreover, there is no significant difference on the resource management practices of the male and female faculty where F-computed = .220 is below the critical value of F-tabulated = 3.982. Accordingly, gender thus not affects the practices of the faculty on the university. There is a very high relationship between the male and female faculty towards the human resource management practices (r = 0.847554).

Based on the findings of the study, the researcher proposes a 1-Year Human Resource Development Program for Mindanao State University through course of actions to capsulate of a firm management. The program encompasses seven (7) concerned areas that will guide the researcher during the implementation of the program.

This study recommends that the proposed development program may be adapted in Mindanao State University- General Santos City using the recommended time frame. That the support of the organization and funding donors may be sought in order to sustain the program.
