Abstract

Over the years, the digital transformation in higher education has been marked by significant advancements, with emerging technologies reshaping traditional teaching and learning methods. Amidst this landscape, the integration of ChatGPT into higher education introduces a new dimension. However, it brings forth noteworthy concerns. While its potential as a tool for learning and collaboration is evident, ethical considerations emerge. The research presented in this paper investigates the knowledge and use of ChatGPT among university students, with a focus on their attitudes, experiences, and concerns. Two surveys were conducted – one at the beginning and the other at the end of the academic semester – to discern changes in student perceptions and interactions with ChatGPT. The primary objective was to gather insights into the extent of student engagement with ChatGPT, both in educational settings and professional contexts. Initial survey results indicated a somewhat negative inclination among students towards ChatGPT, with a substantial portion lacking prior experience. As the semester progressed, however, a notable shift occurred, revealing an increase in both usage and positive response. Many students began incorporating ChatGPT into their academic and professional activities. Despite this positive trend, concerns continued to be present, raising questions about the ethical implications, reliability, and potential consequences associated with the use of ChatGPT. This research highlights the evolving dynamics of student attitudes towards ChatGPT, shedding light on the challenges and opportunities associated with its integration into university teaching. The findings suggest a growing acceptance of ChatGPT as a beneficial tool. Yet, cautionary notes are sounded, emphasizing the importance of ethical and reliable use in teaching and learning with AI. Striking a balance between leveraging ChatGPT's benefits and addressing these concerns is crucial for its effective integration into higher education.
