Workshop "Assessment for Learning"

Room C - from 11:55 to 12:25 a.m.

Peer Learning Assessment System (PeLe)

An assessment normally provides a mechanism for measuring students achievements as a summative assessment ,at the end of a course or during the course. Research show that utilizing formative tests as a part of the summative results, is positive for the students learning. With a formative assessment the focus is placed on ways to provide feedback to the students as stated by Nicol and Macfarlane-Dick (2005): "formative assessment aids learning by generating feedback information that is of benefit to students and to teachers.

During the period 2011-2013 Sr-Trndelag University College (HiST) has led an EU commission co-funded project named Done-IT. The main aim of the project has been to develop a new evaluation model where the (formative) assessment results from several tests and/or the final exam (summative assessment) in a class is being considered when the students receive their final result. Pele, a Computer Aided Assessment System, was designed to give the teacher the tools to prepare immediate feedback after the assessment.

Students submit their results through their private SmartPhones, tablets or computers. This makes the system and method seamless, cost-efficient and fast. The system allows the students to use the same device in a post assessment activity, where the teacher can lead the students through the assessment results, give feedback on the results and immediately engage the students in problems that have not been understood. Here the Student Response System (SRS) that is integrated in Pele, can be used to trigger group discussions and hence creative and collaborative peer learning process in the class.

HiSTs workshop will demonstrate PeLe and the preferred methodology. It will show how easy it is for a teacher to create a test and how fast the answers will be provided to, and used by the teacher to provide feedback to the students. The workshop will focus on the teachers role in the process, and how it is possible to flip the assessment from an area of pure reproduction into an arena for actual learning.
