Abstract

We are presenting a novel initiative in science education, fit for young audiences, that addresses school students of 10 years or older. The program “Discover ESA Live” which Space42 developed and implemented for the European Space Agency, brings into the classroom various topics that range from space science to climate change and space technologies. Students can follow live-stream events led by experienced science communicators during a time slot that slightly exceeds a didactic hour. Video content curated by experts and high-quality graphics contribute to the engaging visuals. Moreover,  students are invited to interact with the presenters during the live broadcast using the classroom facilities or even their personal smartphones. Every live is supported by online interactive material which is always available in the platform. The pre-live and post-live online material provided allows the participants to deepen their knowledge in the STEM topics offered, at their own pace, and can be used to assist the teacher in expanding on the presented subjects. In addition to the above, a 3D design compiled by the students during their participation can be printed at the school or at an accessible maker space, and shows how digital technologies can be used to complement STEM teaching in an entertaining and informative way. By employing multiple languages, the program can reach a wide audience in Europe. It serves as an introduction to contemporary space and climate science that complements the curriculum of science education, encourages careers in STEM, and lowers the technology barrier of entry, as it requires only a point of internet access and a computer in the classroom in order to participate.
