Abstract
The paper presents partial results of a qualitative study, which is part of a broader research project analyzing the transformation of Maria Montessori's educational legacy in the contemporary educational context. The aim of the research is to identify the possibilities and limitations of implementing Montessori principles in preschool education in the 21st century, focusing particularly on challenges related to digitalization and technological development. The study investigates how educators in both traditional and alternative kindergartens perceive the adaptation of Montessori methodology in an environment increasingly influenced by digital technologies and the impact these have on educational processes and children's experiences.
As digital technologies continue to shape various aspects of society, including education, this research seeks to understand the dynamic interaction between Montessori’s child-centered approach and the rapidly evolving digital landscape. Specifically, the study looks at how digital tools and resources are integrated into Montessori practices, how teachers balance the emphasis on hands-on learning with the potential benefits and challenges of technology, and the effects on the development of preschool-aged children.
Data were collected through semi-structured interviews with educators, who provided insights into their experiences and perspectives on integrating digital elements into Montessori-based teaching. The data were thematically analyzed to identify key trends and factors influencing the adoption of digital technologies in Montessori classrooms. The results highlight both the potential benefits and the concerns raised by teachers about maintaining the integrity of Montessori’s core values while adapting to technological changes.
