“More than Meets the Ear: Enhancing EFL Learning and Digital Citizenship through Student-Created Podcasts on the European School Radio”

Abstract

In today’s educational landscape, traditional language learning methods often fall short in fully engaging students or addressing the multifaceted skills required in the 21st century. This paper presents an innovative EFL project involving podcast production through the European School Radio (ESR), a student-driven web radio platform that promotes active learning, creativity, and digital literacy.Unlike conventional approaches where students passively consume audio material, this project places learners at the center of media creation. Fifteen lower secondary students (ages 12–15) with A2–B1+ English proficiency participated in a school radio club at a junior High School on the island of Syros, in the Cyclades, Greece producing monthly podcasts on topics ranging from hobbies and music to internet safety, inclusion, and social issues. Using tools such as Audacity and engaging in peer collaboration, students followed a structured process: brainstorming, writing scripts, rehearsing, recording, editing, and broadcasting. This qualitative study, based on classroom observations and content analysis, highlights clear gains in linguistic competence, digital skills, collaboration, and social awareness. Notably, students displayed increased motivation, self-confidence, and civic engagement through their podcast work. The findings underscore the value of integrating digital media production into EFL instruction. Platforms like ESR can transform learners from passive recipients into empowered communicators and socially aware individuals—supporting both academic and lifelong learning objectives.
