Applying the Backward Design Framework to a Graduate Music Curriculum
Pattaraporn Plitakul, Silpakorn University (Thailand)
Abstract
Curriculum serves as a roadmap directing education, driving knowledge transmission, and embedding skills to produce qualified graduates. Its success depends not only on content but also on graduates’ competencies in responding to stakeholder needs. In a rapidly changing world, stakeholders expect multidisciplinary individuals who possess a blend of hard and soft skills. As the Chair of the Master’s Degree in Music Research and Development, Faculty of Music, Silpakorn University, I recognize that a five-year curriculum revision cycle is essential for maintaining academic standards (Higher Education Standard Committee, 2022). Initially, the stakeholders were identified to gather data on their needs, followed by considering the details of Learning Outcomes according to the Higher Education Qualification Framework, as well as the vision and mission of the university and faculty. These steps led to defining desired results. Next, assessment evidence was specified to determine whether students achieve the set goals. This established acceptable evidence before planning learning experiences and instruction. These processes correspond to Backward Design framework (Wiggins & McTighe, 2005). Consequently, the academic article aims to provide a reflective analysis of the application of the Backward Design framework for the Master’s Degree in Music Research and Development, Faculty of Music, Silpakorn University. The main findings suggest that the framework clarifies learning outcomes and ensures that assessment evidence aligns with the desired results. This approach reduces vague assessment methods by emphasizing data collection based on established goals. However, as a music is a creative art, the analysis reveals that if curriculum designers are rigidly attached to empirical evidence, the intrinsic nature of music discipline may be compromised.
