Abstract
As digital innovations reshape pedagogical frameworks, the integration of immersive technologies into language and literature education offers unprecedented opportunities for student engagement. This presentation examines the application of blending drama education with metaverse technology to transcend physical classroom limitations. Addressing the challenge of creating sustainable, interactive, and safe learning environments, this study introduces a novel Virtual Teaching and Learning (VTL) package titled "The Town of Drama Education." Utilizing the Spatial metaverse platform, the initial phase of the project implemented a blended learning model involving over 300 secondary and university students. Participants engaged in traditional face-to-face workshops alongside virtual sessions where they utilized avatars to perform process drama and character profiling. Drawing upon Green’s 3D L(IT)eracy model, the research evaluates the efficacy of this hybrid approach. A primary focus of the findings is the VTL package's enhancing student's communication skills, with quantitative data revealing significant increases in students' confidence to convey central messages and engage audiences. Qualitatively, the virtual environment provided a "safe space" for introverted learners to overcome performance anxiety. Building on this success, the presentation will also introduce the project's next phase: "Virtual Stages." This further development incorporates two key innovations. First, it integrates Generative AI technology to assist students in scriptwriting and storytelling, fostering digital literacy alongside creative expression. Second, it aims to establish a sustainable community of drama education practitioners by training advanced student-leaders to facilitate workshops and mentor peers. This expanded model not only democratizes access to drama education but also empowers a new generation of reflective leaders capable of navigating the intersection of art, technology, and education.
