Reinventing Teacher Education: Challenging our Troubling Times

Andrew Gitlin, University of Georgia (United States)

Abstract

All those paying attention to current events have witnessed the vast societal changes occurring in the first two decades of the 21st century including widening cultural and economic divisions and related threats to democracy, global warming and further polluting of the environment and a dizzying transformation in the nature of work.  While these societal threats are growing by the day, the education of teachers and the role of schooling in responding to these threats remain largely unchanged.  Reinventing teacher education challenges schools and therefore teacher education to take into account these current threats to global societies and play a forceful role in creating better societies.  To do so, teacher education must address a widely held global “ought “and thereby become a force for a more democratic, connected, equal, and diverse set of societies with increased job opportunities for all and a nature-human connection that reflects a deep sense of caring for the environment as well as the need to accept advice from this spectacular natural force.  Reinventing teacher education, however, does not stop there.  It also dares to lay out a way forward.  Not in the form of a recipe to be followed but as a conceptual/practical design of the possible. Such a form of praxis requires an additional step beyond designing concepts and activities and that is the redesign of the spaces within which teacher education takes place. This additional step has resulted in the invention of a platform specifically wired to do so—divvy.live. And the results of using this platform are included in this paper
