Sustainable Development Goals and the Future of Higher Education Institutions: the Case of Vietnam

Nguyen Thuy Hang, Waseda University (Japan)

Abstract

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), built on the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and also referred to as the 2030 Agenda, are 17 initiatives and 169 targets set by the United Nations to eradicate poverty, fight inequality and stop climate change for a better world. Whilst the MDGs concentrated on universal primary attainment, Goal 4 of the SDGs targets on lifelong learning opportunities for all, working towards providing inclusive and equitable quality education for all levels, from early childhood to tertiary education, also including technical and vocational training. This paper will focus on the role of higher education in realizing the SDGs. Specifically, I will look at the context of Vietnamese Higher Education Institutions (HEI) and seek to answer the following questions: What is the role of HEI in the 2030 Agenda? How can HEI meet the challenges of building a sustainable future? The paper, driven by the necessity for an updated report on Vietnamese Higher Education Institutions, aims to contribute to educational reform efforts in Vietnam. The main objective of the paper is to make recommendations for policy, practice, and research on issues related to HEI in Vietnam.
