Flipped Learning: Freedom in Learning a Foreign Language!

Abstract
ELT has witnessed a big shift from teacher-fronted and lecture-based classrooms to learner-based education to improve the quality of education. Along this, the use of technology and other multimedia tools are becoming more and more popular in online learning to help create a more learner-centered environment. Unlike the traditional models, where students listened to their teachers’ lectures in class and read textbooks or did assignments outside of school, flipped learning model reverses the traditional model and provides a situation where the students study the topic or content on their own through watching video lessons or some other supplementary materials at their own pace, giving them the freedom to spend as much time on pre-class activities as they wish, and do the previously-called homework inside the classroom collaboratively. This model, which has recently been developed and is based on Bloom’s taxonomy of learning, has been put forth to maximize the quality of learner-centered teaching model. Unfortunately, there is very little research on this newly-developed model in EFL environment, especially in Turkey. With this in mind, this study investigates the students’ perception of the flipped learning approach and its effects on their speaking and academic writing skills.
